Press Release Summary: The story of Qantas flight QF 30, which developed a gash in its airframe mid-flight, will only exacerbate the widespread fear of flying.

Press Release Body: New York, NY , July 31, 2008 -- Flying Phobia is unlike other serious phobias because few of the people who have it have actually been in a real traumatic event on a plane. Intense past experiences are one of the main causes of all phobias, but not, apparently, of flying fear.

\"More than half the people who seek help for fear of flying run dramatic \'movies\' inside their mind of really bad stuff happening mid-air\" says Seymour Segnit, Founder and President of CTRN: Change That\'s Right Now. \"Bad mind-movies are a common trait of all phobias - but usually the individual has actually been bitten by a dog, or flopped in front of an audience. We\'ve never had a single case of fear of flying where the client had actually been in and survived a plane that went down.\"

Segnit\'s team at CTRN believe that many of the aviophobia-inducing movies clients run in the minds are accidentally \"installed\" by the media. Cable news and network news shows, TV dramas and blockbuster movies often show planes going down with dramatic special effects shot from a passenger\'s-eye point of view, providing the perfect images for a mind inclined to flying phobia.

The real-life cell-phone movies from inside Qantas flight QF30 - and the pictures of the fuselage with a gaping hole near the wing shown on media outlets world-wide after the flight landed safely this week are a perfect example, according to Mr Segnit:

\"To kick fear of flying, it is important to understand exactly how you are creating the fear in your mind. Dramatic disaster movies in which the person imagines themselves right in the middle of an horrific situation are the hallmark of many phobia cases. But the pictures have to come from somewhere, and because flying is so safe, almost everyone is either making the images up, or playing over scenes they\'ve seen in the media.\"

CTRN offers the following advice to fearful flyers:

1: Go easy on the drugs. Check with your doctor, but understand there\'s no drug specifically for fear of flying, so any you take will never get to the root cause, and may have significant side effects.

2: The thinking comes first, which triggers the fear. If you notice the fear starting, just trying to think happy thoughts won\'t make a big difference for most people. You need to immediately interrupt the fearful thought patterns. Do that sharply enough, and the mind will break the neurological associations that are the root cause of the problem.

3: Get professional help - and make sure the program you choose gets to the root cause of the problem: eliminating the patterns of thought that trigger the fear.

\"Overcoming a phobia like Fear of Flying is actually very simple;\" says Mr. Segnit: \"A person must be genuinely committed to successfully overcoming the fear, then with the right direction you will quickly learn to scrub out those mini disaster movies in the mind so they will never play again.\"
